A
trip to the
capital Tórs
havn is at
least a day’s
trip. From restaruants
to museums, historic
monuments to live
music, Tórshavn is a city
packed full of events to
attend and many places
to see. Make sure to
check in with the tourist
information centre
for festivals or events
during your time of visit.
Therefore, we advise a
trip to Suðurstreymoy
in two days: one day
in Tórshavn and the
other in other areas
of Suðurstreymoy.
Notable historical places
are Kirkjubøur (ruins
of Magnus Cathedral,
St. Olav’s church) and
Nólsoy (Korndalur and
the Scottish princess).
Most tourist attractions
and landmarks are open
all year long with limited
opening hours during
off season (generally
September to May for
museums). Tórshavn is
a city flexible for you to
structure your day as
you desire. Below, we
have grouped into areas
of interest for you to
choose.

Kirkjubøur
Start your day hiking from Tórshavn to Kirkjubøur.
A 7 kilometer hike with footpath and cairns, this is a
relatively easy walk for most people. You can take
the city bus (no. 5E) back to Tórshavn at 13.18 or take
the bus (5V) at 09.34 to Kirkjubøur and hike back to
Tórshavn. (Monday-Friday only). Kirkjubøur has two
ancient sites currently being used today: the oldest
church, St. Olav, and the oldest wooden house in the
world, Kirkjubøargarður. You will also find the ruins of
Magnus Cathedral from the 1300s.
Nólsoy
Once back in Tórshavn take the 20 minute ferry ride
out to Nólsoy, where legend says a Scottish princess
lived in Korndalur on this island. You can find the routes
at www.ssl.fo. In Nólsoy you will visit the secret hideout
the Faroese people ran to when the pirates raided the
island. There is also a lighthouse, Stongin, that was the
first to be ever built in the Faroe Islands. Nólsoy also
has a cosy cafe for you to enjoy your dinner.
