T
hese six islands
are very diffe
rent and each
has its own
distinctive character.
Together they make
up a unit around the
main town of Klaksvík.
Here you will find a
dramatic countryside,
idyllic villages and a
people who live in close
connection with the
beautiful, yet wild ocean.
The breath-taking
scenery is captivating.
Dramatic high moun
tains with steep falls to
the sea and scattered
small villages. The
Northern Isles have a
lot to offer to visitors.
We have history, culture,
nature, as well as
dynamic trades and
industries.
There are many
options on what one
can do in a day in the
Northern Islands, but we
couldn’t possibly fit them
all on here. To start you
off, here are two options:
Klaksvik in a day
The Northern Isles consists of six islands: Fugloy, Svínoy, Viðoy, Borðoy, Kunoy and
Kalsoy, which makes up the north eastern corner of the Faroe Islands
Welcome to the Northern Islands
Klakkur
Hike the 414 m high mountain Klakkur where the path is
easy to find and friendly to walk on - this is also one of
the few places skiers go in the winter. Before you start
the hike up Klakkur, you can either walk or drive up
Hálsur on the gravel ground named Ástarbreytin (The
path of love). In the valley just south of Hálsur is a place
that used to be named “Á Vaktini” (on guard), which is
a place legend says people used to keep watch over
hostile incoming ships. On your way up, you will get a
panorama view of Klaksvik, and once you reach the top
you get an amazing view of Leirvik and if the weather
allows the southern island of Nólsoy. Make your way
down from the hike and stop by a local café to enjoy
your lunch. Føroyar Bjór is a local brewery in Klaksvík, a
great occassion to try some local beer.
Christianskirkjan
After lunch, visit one of the most beautiful churches in
the Faroes. One of the few places in the Faroes to find
religiously stained windows, you will find beautiful art in
the sanctuary as well as in the basement.
Úti í Grøv
This beautiful park is only minutes from Klaksvik. A
peaceful place with flowers, bushes, trees, streams
coming down the valley, if you happen to be out when
the sun shines from the west, the park becomes cosy
warm where you can even take a nap! At the park you
are also able to see remains of a house from Viking
time as well as the first outdoor swimming pool of the
island, which was built in 1902.
Norðoya Fornminnissavn
The local historical museum, which houses in the old
merchant house in Klaksvík and was built in 1838 as a
branch to the Danish monopoly trade.
Gamla Seglhúsið
Art exhibition with different, well-known Faroese artists.
