VOLume 1 summer 2015 23 T he main goal for Vágar Airport is to have a safe and healthy business, which hopefully results in having a profit at the end of every year. And with the longer runway, new navigational instruments, better light configuration, a new terminal and service- buildings the future is looking bright for the airport. More direct routes At the moment the only airline operating at Vágar Airport is the national airline of the Faroe Islands, Atlantic Airways, but Jákup Sverri Kass, CEO at Vágar Airport, says, that he is hoping for two airlines flying in and out of Vágar Airport in ten years time. – Atlantic Airways has for decades been the foundation in the transport of passangers via air between the Faroe Islands and the rest of the world. The airline has regular flights to several of our neighbouring countries all year round. They are doing a good job, but we are hoping for more direct flights between Vágar Airport and the rest of the world, says Jákup Sverri Kass. He says that airline companies have shown interest in operating flights to and from the Faroe Islands and using Vágar Airport for regular flights. – I can imagine that in maybe ten years time we have two airline companies, Atlantic Airways and a foreign company, having direct flights between Vágar Airport and destinations abroad, says Jákup Sverri Kass. Improvement in duty free sales One of the big improvements with the new terminal at Vágar Airport is the transit area which is much bigger today than it was in the old terminal at the airport. The transit area holds a cafe, a bar and a duty free shop which offers a wide range of goods for the travellers. – Duty Free FAE is a joint company that Vagar Airport and Atlantic Airways own 50/50 We have put a great effort in getting a proper duty free shop that can offer the same kind of goods that you get in big international airports around the world, and I think this has been a great success. The passengers appreciate this and it also a new service to the passengers that they can now enter a transit area before boarding, where they have to opportunity to buy a coffee and a sandwich or maybe a drink. As we are competing with the likes of Copenhagen Airport, we aim to have lower prices than other airports so that passengers will buy here and not abroad. The transit area in the old terminal was just a few seats with a small duty free shop, so this is in many ways a big improvement, says Jákup Sverri Kass. Customer service is the key word The key word for the succes of Vágar Airport is customer service according to Jákup Sverri Kass. – If our customers, both travellers and airlines, are happy, then everything else will work out. We put a great deal of effort in giving as good a service as possible. When the passengers embark and have picked up their luggage, they can choose to go by bus to their final destination or they can use shuttle service to Tórshavn or other places on the islands. Furthermore there are multiple car hire companies located in the terminal, so that is also an option. We do our best to live up to the demands from our customers, but of course we can also always improve, says Jákup Sverri Kass, CEO at Vágar Airport. Vágar Airport is the only airport in the Faroe Islands. Big investments have been made in the airport with a new terminal opening last summer and the runway being recently expanded. Their airport is now ready for new challenges says Jákup Sverri Kass, CEO at Vágar Airport A modern airport ready for new challenges welcome to the faroe islands Jákup Sverri Kass
