A
trip to Suðuroy
starts from
Tórshavn with
a two-hour
mini-cruise trip with the
ferry Smyril. The ferry
takes both passengers
and personal cars if
you are renting. On
this trip, you will pass
islands Sandoy, Skúvoy,
Stóra Dímun and Lítla
Dímum. You can find the
scheduled trips at www.

Suðuroy in a day
Suðuroy is the southernmost islands of the country and the island that
is furthest away from the capital
Welcome to Suðuroy
Fámjin
After you arrive in Tvøroyri, make your trip down south
to Fámjin, the home of the very first Faroese flag,
Merkið, located on the church walls. The flag was made
in 1919 and was recognized officially as the Faroese flag
in 1940 during the World War II.
There are two options
you can travel to Hov:
a drive through the
tunnel or a scenic walk
following the route
»Sóljurutan« around
the edge of Hov. This
walk leaves several
possibilities for stops
where you can enjoy
the nature and eat your
packed lunch while enjoying the sheep, birds, wind and
the sound of the sea roaring around you.
Hov
Before you arrive in Hov, call the local tourist centre to
schedule an historic tour through the village. Hov was
the home of Hovgrímur, one of the viking chiefs, from
which the village is named after as well.
Vágur
As you drive to Vágur you should go west to
»Vásgseiðið«: a beautiful spot on both a sunny
summersday and also on a stormy wintersday. Make
the all the way to the edge where you car will take you
as close as 20 meters from the edge. From there you
can see down on magnificent bird cliffs on Suðuroy’s
west side. You can also visit museums and art exhibits
in the village.

Sumba
Drive south to Sumba
through the tunnel
gjøgnum tunnulin but
on your way back, take
the old village route
»um Hestin«. Sumba is
an unusually stunning
place, which also has a
rich history and sagas
about heroes and
villains surrounding it.
Contact Visit Suðuroy
and you will be provided
with a guide who will
take you on a scenic
walk and tell you the
story of the white rocks
found on the field and
the two brothers, both
villains, who hid in one
of the many caves in the
field and why they were
able to hide as long
as they did before the
law caught up to them.
If the day is clear you
might be able to see all
the way to the northern
islands on the walk
back.
