SAKSUN
Saksun, located
at the westside of
Norðurstremoy, may feel
like a detour but don’t
let this deter you from
making a trip to the
famous grass rooftop
houses. Enjoy your
lunch here in Saksun
surrounded by the raw
Faroese nature. You’ll
find an old farmhouse,
now a national heritage
museum Dúvugarðar,
giving you a glimpse of
the rural Faroese life in
the past. You can walk
down to the roundbay
where in low tide, you
can walk on the shore.
Be aware of high tide
levels and always check
with the nearest tourist
office if it is a safe tide
level to walk. You will
need a car or one of the
scheduled tour buses for
this trip.
KVÍVÍK
A big part of Faroese
history is the viking
settlers that lived on the
islands for centuries.
Kvívík is one of the
few places you can
experience the early
settlers’ settlement.
The village is a well
preserved farmstead
with remains the houses
vikings have built.
VESTMANNA
Before you come to
Vestmanna book the
celebrated birdcliffs and
grottos by boat tour.
This is one of the most
popular tours in the
Faroe Islands for a very
good reason: This tour
will take you in grottos
and over 600 meters
high vertical cliffs where
you’ll experience sea
birds nesting. Tours
can be booked at Visit
Torshavn.
N
orðurstreymoy
is known
for famous
scenes such
as Saksun and its grass
rooftop houses and the
600m tall, raw, rugged
cliffs that harbor birds in
Vestmanna. Tjørnuvík is a
traditional Faroese villlage
offering a breathtaking
view of Risin and Kellingin
and Kvívík is a well
preserved remains of a
Viking farmstead.
While there are buses
or private bookings you
can book to visit different
places in Norðurstreymoy,
having a personal
vehicle would offer an
opportunity to visit many
locations in one day with
little time constraint.

WELCOME TO NORÐURSTREYMOY
TJØRNUVÍK
Start your day early with a breathtaking view of “Risin
and Kellingin” (The giant and the witch), a famous
location of a Faroese saga where a giant tried to take
the islands to Iceland. Here, you will also find a naturally
made shape of a Greek theatre. Make sure to bring a
packed lunch for your day, or stop by one of the many
grocery stores on your way to get lunch to go.
FOSSÁ
As you leave Tjørnuvík, you will come across the
highest waterfall in the Faroe Islands, known as Fossá.
It is located in between Hvalvík and Haldarsvík. You
can make a short stop and even hike certain parts of
the waterfall although you must proceed at your own
caution.
HVALVÍK
The idyllic old church in Hvalvík dates from 1829 and is
the oldest wooden church in the Faroes. It is a typical
example with a stone foundation, black tarred walls,
white windows and topped with a grass roof with wild
flowers and a little tower. The old pulpit dating from
1609 originally stood in the Cathedral in Tórshavn. It
is exquisitely beautiful and well worth a visit. As with
other churches on the islands, Sunday services are
either at 11am or 12am.
GJÓGV
End your day at Gjáargarður in the old, idyllic village
of Gjógv (Meaning gorge) with a hearty meal at Hotel
Gjáargarður. After your meal use the opportunity to
take a leisurely walk in the village. In the northern part
of Gjógv there is a 200 meter long majestic gorge.
Contact Gjáargarður for more information on how to
book your table.
You’ll find
an old farm
house,
giving you a
glimpse of
the rural life
