26 ONS 2008 Sosialurin 21. august 2008 Oil industry The history of Faroeyard began already way back in 1898, when Vestmanna Skipasmiðja was established. Skála Skipasmiðja was the next piece in the jigsaw. In 1936, Tórshavnar Skipasmiðja was founded, and as the last piece the mechanical workshop, FJM was established in 1986. In 1986, Vestmanna Skipasmiðja was acquired by the shipbuilding yard in Tórshavn, and in 1997, Skála Skipasmiðja joined the group. All the pieces slowly begun to come together, and in 2004 the name: Faroeyard was adopted. The Sales and Marketing manager, Mr Hans Jacob Poulsen explains that the company is growing ever larger on the international market and today the company employs app. 350 people, whereof 50 are abroad. The daughter company PAM Offshore Service, has from the offset worked within the offshore industry in Norway. PAM Offshore service delivers mechanics, electricians, engineers and including the vessels the Thor Alpha and Thor Omega, Faroeyard has become an even larger subcontractor in an international context, says Mr Hans Jacob Poulsen. Two support vessels The latest accomplishment of Faroeyard in the offshore industry is the delivery of two support vessels for the shipping company Thor in Hósvik. The first, the Thor Alpha was delivered in February of 2008, and it went straight to the Gulf of Mexico. The latter vessel, the Thor Omega, a sister ship to the Thor Alpha, was floated in June, and will be delivered in September of this year. -“These are two very well equipped vessels. The vessels dimensions are 55 metres long and 13 metres broad. Both vessels have electro-diesel engines and are being used as support vessels for vessels undertaking seismic surveys”, says Mr Poulsen. Latest update Faroeyard was also represented at Offshore Europe in Aberdeen last year, but only by Pam Offshore Service. This time they will be represented as a single whole company. The intention is to present the company better to the rest of the offshore industry at the exhibition. They intend to expand their activity, particularly within maintenance and vessel repairs on the whole north Atlantic area. They are well endowed technically and are also competitive price wise. -“Our geographical location is one of the foremost reasons for us to present ourselves to the offshore industry. The sailing distance to the Faroes is short from most oil areas in the North Sea, in some instances even shorter than to other countries”, says Mr Poulsen, the Faroeyard Sales and Marketing manager. Oil activities Since the company was founded in 1999, it has seen continual development and over the past few years accumulated in-depth knowledge and extensive experience within the service sector and trade in general with the oil industry, through operating the oil industry supply base in Rúnavík. The ASB head office on the Runavikar town council’s quayside area, Kongshavn no. 6 in Saltangará, and they employ staff according to their workload. Over the past few years, they have mixed all the mud used offshore in the Faroes, and offer a logistical service and the delivery of chemicals to the oil industry. ASB is a company comprised of 19 different companies, and are therefore capable of offering a very wide range of services. They have established a broad subcontractor base, offering services and equipment at competitive prices. ISO certification Since the last oil exploration activities, ASB has improved its services even more. They now hold ISO 9001:2000 certification from Det Norske Veritas, and this ensures their services conform to an international standard. The system will be updated and developed according to requirements. The intention is also to use this in a plan to present the company as an offshore subcontractor to oil companies working on the UK side of the border. This certification requires among other aspects, a customer satisfaction survey, and to date ASB has received very good recommendations, says Mr Eli Lassen, CEO. -“We strive to have satisfied clients and therefore we can use these recommendations to improve our services even more. On top of this Rúnavik is the best natural haven in the Faroes, with its large backup/storage area for material and equipment, the oil supply base at Rúnavik is very suitable for organising oil related activities from”, says Mr Lassen. Wholesale subcontractor To date, ASB has mainly dealt with the bulk- and mud production, harbour clearance, storage and delivery of chemicals. They now intend to expand their activities so oil companies have a one-point contact call number for all their necessities. –“We intend to present ourselves as a wholesale subcontractor, e. g. ASB will also function as an agent. The oil companies can call us and we will deliver all they require, says Mr Lassen. By supplying such a service, ASB could lighten the oil companies’ workload consider- able and simultaneously deliver a good and expedient service. Wholesale delivery of services and equipment Increased activity in the offshore industry Faroeyard is one of the larger Faroe companies, with their app 350 employees.
