The museum contains three departments, covering archaeology, traditional folk culture, and architecture. The Boat Collection The style of the Faroe Islands rowing boat is similar to that of boats of the Viking Age. The design has changed over a thousand of years, reaching its present form. The boat collection contains traditional boats that were common around 1900. The boats were used for fishing, pilot-whale hunting, fowling, in addition to transportation of people and cargo. National Dress The national dress of the Faroe Islands is worn on village festivals and other special occasions, especially Ólavsøka, which is the National Day of the islands (July 29th). Flag The national movement developed towards the end of the 19th century and a desire arose among Faroese people to have their own flag as a national symbol. In 1919 Faroese students in Copenhagen designed the present flag that is used today and on April 25th 1940 the flag (named “Merkið”) was internationally accepted. In the exhibition at the open- air museum in Hoyvík, visitors can see how people used to live in the old days. It is important to provide the tourists a cosy and informative visit while they explore the past. You can buy coffee and enjoy the view or find something in the sightseeing store for you to be reminded of later. The farm was established around 1810. The buildings are preserved at their original place. A walk through the cluster of buildings provides the visitor with an experience of the old settlement and its environment. The open-air museum at Hoyvík is only open during the summer period.
