12 mai 2009 lýsingartilfar FAROE ISLANDS info The Faroe Islanders have always depended deeply on the ressources in the oceans around them. Luckily The North East Atlantic is rich in living ressources. Both in terms of diversity and abundance the North East atlantic has been able to produce protein rich food for all the coastal populations for centuries. The biological diversity on the Faroe Plateau is of course the 247 fish species. The number of species of invertebrates is by far greater than the number of fish species. Although the Faroe Aquarium is a small aquarium, we are proud to present a selection of fish species from the Plateau in our exhibition. Commercially most important are several species from the Cod family Gadidae. In our exhibition we have amongst other species cod (Gadus Morhua), tusk (Brosme brosme), saithe (Polachius virens) and Ling (Molva molva). Although commercially unimportant, many fish species have interesting lifestories or behaviours. Among these is Cyclopterus lumpus, who besides having a peculiar looks, also has an interesting biology. They come close shore to spawn in pairs. When spawning is over the female leaves while the male stays with the eggs until they hatch. Cold water fishspecies with a rather hostile looks are the wolffishes. In the exhibition we have wolffish, northern wolffish and the spotted wolffish. Rays and sharks are also represented in our exhibition. We have a starry ray, and recently a blue skate hatched in one of our aquariums. Allthough we occasionally receive a variety of shark species, the only shark species that thrives is the smallspotted dogfish. This species thrives so well, that they on regular basis lay eggs, and the eggs hatch as well. Invertebrates are numerous. Crustaceans, bivalves and cephalopods are the largest. The octopus Eledone eledone is one of the cephalopod species, and Cancer pagurus is one of the fascinating crustaceans in our exhibition. We hope you will find time to visit our exhibition.
