Since you are always hiking through privately run outfields, you need permission first, if you do not go on a prearranged excursion. Please contact the tourist offices or the local sheep farmer. HIKING OPTIONS: Slættaratindur: The highest mountain in the Faroe Islands is called Slættaratindur (882 m). From the top, there is a fant astic view of the surrounding islands. This tour is especially popular on the longest day of the year, when many locals gather here to watch the sun just dip beyond the horizon. The Altar and Hellurnar: Follow the old cairn trail from Fuglafjørður to Hellurnar. When you reach the pass between the two villages, make a detour to the northern mountain peak with the rock formation known as the Altar to enjoy the splendid view. From the pass, follow the rocks marked with yellow to reach the tiny village of Hellurnar. Here, a privately owned old house was recently rebuilt in the old style using driftwood and local materials. The old path over the mountain from Leirvík to Norðragøta: The hike starts at the Viking settlement in Leirvík and continues over the mountain to Norðragøta. Observation binoculars are mounted at the top of the mountain, so you have a spectacular view over the Leirvík and Gøta fjords. This is an easy to moderate hike, but a guide is recommended. Elduvík – Oyndarfjørður: Hike along the old village path from Oyndarfjørður to the charming village of Elduvík. This is an easy to moderate hike with flat terrain, but people with a tendency to vertigo might feel that the area below the path is somewhat steep. Rappelling With rappelling and rock climbing, Sherpa offers a variety of adventurous team activities near the village of Æðuvík. These are perfect for the courageous tourists or the group looking for a team building experience. MUSIC AND FOOD FAROESE EVENING: Gjáargarður: Experience a Faroese evening with traditional food and culture at the Guesthouse of Gjógv. Try Faroese chain dancing and enjoy a traditional Faroese meal at this event held every Wednesday evening with musical performances by various Faroese artists. Booking in advance: www.gjaargardur.fo HOYMAbit: ‘Hoyma’ means home and ‘bit’ means bite and rhymes with beat.
