VOLUME 5 SUMMER 2019 26 O ld walking paths made by footsteps over thousands of years can be found between the villages you can enjoy on your own or by booking a local guide at the tourist office for a historically enriching tour. For the fishing enthusiasts, bring your fishing rod because there are lots of lakes for fishing opportunities. Sandoy is an island with a lot of history, sagas and traditions, that can be seen in the many attractions on the island. You can travel to Sandoy by ferry from Gamlarætt to Skopun. The ferry schedule can be seen at www.ssl.fo, route 66. SANDOY AND SKÚVOY IN A DAY SANDOY AND SKÚVOY OFFER SCENIC HIKING EXPERIENCES, RICH BIRDLIFE, LOTS OF HISTORY, INTERESTING ARCHEOLOGY AND COSY VILLAGES WELCOME TO SANDOY AND SKÚVOY SKOPUN Start your morning by taking the ferry from Gamlarætt to Skopun. Here you can experience the narrow streets of a traditional fishing village and see one of the largest mailboxes ever made. SANDUR Sandur is a 15 minute drive from Skopun. Sandur is a village of archaeological interest and is also the only place in the Faroe Islands with coastal sand dunes. In Sandur you’ll also find the cosy Kafe Breiðateig located in the heart of the village, in the old telephone exchange house. SKÚVOY Take a 30 minute boat ride from Sandur to the small island Skúvoy. You will find a fantastic birdlife co- existing with only 30 residents in the village. Because the population is small and remote, the island gives a rare and unique opportunity for people to experience life on a remote island. Timetable for the ferry can be found at www.ssl.fo, route 66. LOCAL CULTURE After visiting Skúvoy and arriving in Sandur, drive to the beautiful bay of Søltuvík, where you can find the anchors and a memorial stone for the ship Principia, which shipwrecked in 1895. Then visit the huge yarn-bombed rock in Bartalstrøð in Sandur where local women have knitted a large art piece with the saga of the old witch as inspiration. We also recommend a visit to Listasavnið á Sandi (The art museum in Sandur). The opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 11am – 13pm, from June 1st to August 31st. The only place in the Faroe Islands with coastal sand dunes. EXPLORE THE ISLANDS TRAVEL TIPS Sandur HÚSAVÍK In the midst of old traditional Faroese houses, take a trip down to the remains of a medieval farm that belonged to the rich and hard-hearted Lady of Húsavík. There are bicycles for rent and an outdoor hot-tub you can enjoy with a beautiful view. The new and cosy Caféin á Mølini opened last summer in a historical building.
